NEWS FROM THE ALC
Weekly ALC Tip:
If you want to change the look of your home, new roof tiles are one way to accomplish that. An ALC permit is required to replace all your tiles. Color and design must be consistent with colors used within the community. Samples and/or a product brochure are required as part of the application submittal.
If you are just replacing the underlayment, no ALC permit is needed. But your vigilance as a homeowner will be needed. The contractor will more than likely find broken tiles and to match new tiles with existing tiles is almost impossible, but usually there is a close match, insist on it. This is where you, as the homeowner, need to speak up. Don’t just let the contractor do what they want. Definitely be cautious about contractor claims that more new tiles are necessary to provide “proper” roof coverage.
How the new tiles are integrated with the old tiles will make or break the look of your roof.
If your roof has different angles sections, have the contractor make one of those different sections all new tiles. This way when the light reflects off that section it will offset the slight difference in color and should not be noticeable. If your roof is just two sections, the best way to hide the slight difference in color is to make the bottom row on the back of the house all new tiles. This will have the least visual impact of the look of your home to the neighborhood.
If you are putting on Solar, save the tiles removed to mount the panels (store them inside your garage). You can use those saved tiles to replace cracked tiles in the future.
